AmmonitesAmmonites are the fossilized, hard shells of extinct mollusks. Their closest relative is the chambered Nautilus from the Pacific and Indian oceans. Ammonites existed for close to 330 million years. The generic name, ammonite, was given centuries ago, because of its resemblance to the ram-like horns of Ammon, the Egyptian god of life and reproduction. The Navajos and other Indians of the North American Plains carried ammonites in their medicine bags for health and good hunting. Some of these ammonites were just weathered fragments. They were called buffalo stones, because of their resemblance to the North American bison. Ammonite fossils are found on every continent. They are treasured for their appearance and form. Some show very intricate suture patterns, which are created by the complex walls dividing the inside of the shell. Others, as those from southern Alberta, show brilliant colors. This beautiful array of colors found in ammonites comes from light interference by the shell layers. These ammonite shells have been discovered in virtually every naturally occurring color. That is why they are sought after by collectors all over the world. Our ammonites come from Southern Alberta, Canada. They are found in the upper Cretaceous Bearpaw formation, which has been dated at approximately 71 million years old. All of our ammonites have been approved for export by the Alberta and Canadian governments. Ammonites are found in various sizes and colors. Pricing is based on size, shape, number of colors present, brightness of those colors, and overall appearance. [Example] Each ammonite comes with a certificate of authenticity and its own acrylic stand; custom-made oak stands are supplied for large ammonites.
